J.F. Willumsens Museum

J.F. Willumsens Museum is an art museum located in Frederikssund. The museum contains the entire J.F. Willumsen's collection of works of art. Willumsen donated, in 1947, his entire collection of art to the Danish state which contains both Willumsen's own works, but also his own art collection holding 2000 pieces og art, photographs, books, letters, diaries, notes and records. The museum's original building, was built in 1957 by architect Thyge Hvass. The Round Tower Lookout Tower – Observatory – Exhibitions – Concerts.One of the best-known and most popular structures in Denmark, the Round Tower has been a distinctive feature of the Copenhagen skyline since 1642. The Tower once soared far above the rest of the rooftops in the city, and University astronomers studied the stars and planets from the Observatory at the top. The scholars may have forsaken the building a long time ago, but during the winter visitors are still able to gaze at the cosmos from Europe's oldest functioning observatory. The platform that runs around the outside of the Observatory affords views over the old Latin Quarter – from here, you can spot most of the city's famous buildings. The Round Tower does not have an elevator, so visitors have to climb the winding, white-washed Spiral Walk, where kids often hide in the niches, only to jump out shouting “boo!” as adults approach. Halfway up the tower is the entrance to the large and stunningly beautiful Library Hall, which now serves as a popular gallery and concert venue. It hosts several exhibitions a year, and stages concerts almost every week. Above the Library is the Bell Loft, notable for its enormous wooden beams, which were used in the reconstruction of the Tower following the great fire of Copenhagen in 1728. The Loft is also home to a small exhibition of fascinating artefacts from the Tower's history, including Christian IV's wax seal, a tin of medicine produced by Tycho Brahe, and a piece of the bomb that exploded in the Library Hall during the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807.The Round Tower was built by Christian IV between 1637 and 1642. It was the first part of the Trinitatis Complex, which combined church, library and observatory in a single building.

The Hirschsprung Collection (Den Hirschsprungske Samling)

The Hirschsprung Collection is beautifully situated in the green parklands of the Ostre Anlaeg on the old ramparts of Copenhagen. The museum houses Heinrich and Pauline Hirschsprung's collection of Danish art and first opened its doors to the public in the summer of 1911. The museum was designed by the architect H.B. Storck, while the original interior and display was designed by the art historian Emil Hannover, who also became the museum's first Director. Henrich Hirschsprung donated his collection of works from the 19th century to the Danish state in 1902. The collection includes masterpieces by the Danish Golden age painters such as Eckersberg, Lundbye and Kobke as well as artists from the modern period such as the famous Danish painters P.S. Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden
The beautiful Botanical Garden, situated in the heart of Copenhagen, is a living museum and home to Denmark’s largest collection of plants from all over the world, incl. species that are extinct in the wild.

The garden features everything from spectacular orchids to cycads from the time of the dinosaurs. In the Victorian Palm House, you get to experience the rainforest from above, and in the summertime, you can even study living butterflies up close. Also, visit the garden shop and coffee cart.

Experience the stunning nature on the lakes outside of Copenhagen with Baadfarten. Dating back to the start 1890’s, Baadfarten sails with old wooden boats on three beautiful lakes: Lyngby Lake - Millstream, Bagsværd Lake and Furesøen. Two of the original boats, Princess Alexandrine from 1895 and Prince Christian from 1896 are still in full service today.

Baadfarten has three different tours on the lakes, which are situated in the most idyllic landscapes. Zoological Museum

Explore natural history among animals from all over the world.

At the museum, you will meet the mammoth, the 17-meters-long dinosaur, Misty, and other prehistoric giants. Walk in the footsteps of Charles Darwin in the exhibition on evolution or visit the Natural History Laboratory where you can touch the soft fur of the animals and their sharp teeth. Helsingoer Vaerftsmuseum

The Shipyard Museum is about the time where the city’s shipyard built ships, and the working class was growing.

Helsingør Shipyard Museum is a story about hard work, noise, pride, and solidarity in times past where the shipyard whistle controlled the life of the city. Economic as well as work wise, socially, culturally and politically the shipyard was the natural central point.

The shipyard was by far the biggest workplace. When the shipyard whistle announced lunch and closing time it was like experiencing a cycling race. Hundreds of cyclists fought to be the first to come home, whereas the way to work was calmer.

The Shipyard was the driving force in the new Helsingør after the time of Sound Toll that secured thousands of families their bread and butter and tax for the city. The shipyard museum informs of the workplace and the shipyard city over 100 years and secures memories and reminiscences from a time where Helsingør was an industrial town, self-sufficient with jobs.

The Vessels at Holmen: Saelen, Sehested and Peder Skram

The submarine Sælen was commissioned into the Royal Danish Navy in 1990 as the last submarine in Danish service. It was also the only submarine to ever participate in hostilities.

Sælen is a small dieselelectric submarine, particularly suited for operations in coastal waters where it could encroach without detection.

It was armed with eight torpedo-tubes and could deploy navy seals. When you visit the submarine, you will experience how the conditions were for the crew of 24 sailors. During the Cold War, submarines of the Royal Danish Navy were feared by the enemy due to their low detectability.

In 2002 Sælen participated in NATO counter terrorism operations in the Mediterranean. Shortly before its return to Denmark, the submarine was redirected to the Arabian Gulf where it, along with the Corvette Olfert Fischer, conducted crucial operations during the second war in Iraq.

Sælen was decommissioned in 2004.

According to written sources from the middle ages, it was in the area surrounding Lejre Museum, that the birth of the Danish realm took place. It is here, you find the first line of Danish kings, Skjoldungerne, who, according to the legend, had their base during the Iron Age and the Viking Age in Denmark (500-1000 A.C.).

The exhibition is divided into three general themes. The first presents the original sources – the written myths and the archaeological evidence. Here you can experience the legendary myths through sound, light, and film, and it is here, that you get an introduction to the history of Lejre.

The second main theme is shaped like a big digital wall map, where you actively can seek information about the monuments and the excavations in the area surrounding the museum.

In the third theme, you find the museums archaeological treasures from the area – the world-renowned Odin-statue, the Gevninge-finding and Denmarks largest silver treasure, Mannerupskatten.

The Danish Music Museum

You will find Ordrupgaard in scenic, peaceful surroundings just 10 km north of Copenhagen. The museum offers a unique array of world-class art, design and architecture.

Monet, Degas, Gauguin – and Hammershøi
At Ordrupgaard, you can explore one of Northern Europe’s most important collections of French Impressionism, featuring leading figures like Monet, Degas and Gauguin. In addition, visitors can enjoy an exquisite collection of Danish art focusing on Vilhelm Hammershøi and his contemporaries – as well as a succession of special exhibitions.

Finn Juhl, Zaha Hadid and Snøhetta
You can also visit the former home of furniture designer and architect Finn Juhl.

Star architect Zaha Hadid and the award-winning design studio Snøhetta have also made their imprint on Ordrupgaard.

Ever since the couple who founded Ordrupgaard, Wilhelm and Henny Hansen, moved here in 1918, a pleasant, informal atmosphere has infused this place. It still does, making the museum popular with all generations.

North Atlantic House

North Atlantic House is an art center where you can encounter North Atlantic art and culture. Here, people from Iceand, Greenland, The Faroe Islands, Denmark - and the rest of the world - meet and inspire one another.

A visit to North Atlantic House is guaranteed to expand your horizon and stir your senses. You will find two exhibition rooms in which you can get a taste of North Atlantic culture through changing exhibitions, that shed light on the art scene of each of the three countries, in turn.

Furthermore, on specific days and evenings, you can experience everything from concerts, movies, presentations and events.

Explore North Atlantic art and culture in the beautiful warehouse from the 1700s. Built in 1767, North Atlantic House was the port for maritime traffic between Denmark and the North Atlantic for over 200 years.

Nikolaj Kunsthal

Nikolaj Kunsthal exhibits Danish and international contemporary art in the heart of Copenhagen. The art centre is located in the former St. Nikolaj Church, Copenhagen’s third oldest church with one of the tallest towers in the city – a unique setting for contemporary art Europe-wide.

With pertinent and innovative exhibitions, the art centre offers Copenhagen locals and visitors inspiring and challenging insights into contemporary artistic and cultural developments.

Nikolaj Kunsthal collaborates with a wide range of organisations locally, nationally and internationally in the realm of new artistic forms and media. The art centre also creates projects in public space, an annual and popular exhibition for children, as well as hosting Denmark’s largest video art festival FOKUS.

Munkeruphus

Munkeruphus is a former artist’s house, idyllically situated overlooking the Sound between Gilleleje and Dronningmølle. The listed building, which was the home and workplace of the hybrid artist Gunnar Aagaard Andersen (1919-1986), has changing exhibitions.

There is also a small shop, a charming café with views of the sea, and a large garden with sculptures and outside dining. Events, guided tours, and workshops are held during the summer months.

Frederikssund Museum, Faergegarden

Frederikssund Museum is Roskilde fjord's cultural history museum. Frederikssund Museum's new permanent exhibition deals with the interaction between man, life around the fjords and Frederikssund's history.

Frederikssund Museum is located just above the Crown Prince Frederiks Bro at Hornsherred in the historic red building from 1893. In the late 1900s, the old Færgegård (ferry house) was used as a guesthouse, where there were both guest rooms, kitchen and utility room that was often rented to families with children who would like to experience the fjord and the scenic surroundings around the area. It is said that Mr. Lorentzen who was hiring out of the farm at that time was a nice man towards the children and were allowed to pick wild raspberries in the woods behind the farm.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is located in the center of Copenhagen and the museum collection consists primarily of works of art and archaeological objects from Ancient Egypt, the worlds of Ancient Greece and Rome, Etruscan Culture, as well as Danish and French art of the 19th century.

The collection
The collection of ancient sculpture includes an extensive collection of Ancient Greek and Roman portrait heads as well as a large collection of Palmyrene portraits. The modern part of the collection includes French sculpture from the 19th century – featuring a significant selection of works by Auguste Rodin – and French painting from 1800 to 1950, with Impressionism and Paul Gauguin as the absolute stars, plus a collection of Danish Golden Age Art. The greater proportion of the collection forms part of the museum’s permanent exhibitions, though there are, also, temporary special exhibitions which help to develop a perspective on the museum’s collection with the aid of works on loan.

Rudolph Tegners Museum

At the Rudolph Tegner Museum and Statue park in Dronningmølle north of Copenhagen, you can view the work of Danish sculptor Rudolph Tegner (1873 - 1950).

The museum was built by Rudolph Tegner himself. In 1916 he bought a piece of land where he constructed a building to display his own art.

Today several hundred pieces of his art is on display at the museum and in the surrounding garden.

Rudolph Tegner was viewed as a provocateur at his time, but is today regarded as a ground breaking artist. His sculptures are very monumental and intense.

Children can play in the park

The surrounding garden is a great place for children with lots of activities. Moreover, the museum offers workshops and orienteering race in the Statue park.

If you get hungry or thirsty while visiting the museum, you can go to the little nice café, where you can buy coffee, cake, toast, soup or a light lunch.

Skibsklarerergaarden

The museum Skibsklarerergaarden describes the first grand time of prosperity, Sundtoldtiden/The time of the Sound Toll. The house is the best-preserved merchant’s house and shipbroker house. It dates back to the 16th century, but the condition it is in now, dates back to 1780 and the following decades, and has remained unchanged.
